It might be because we value artefacts for their age - precious survivors of an irretrievable past - or (in this case) because of their association with some famous person.. Is History really mainly the study of a a very few famous or powerful individuals who we idolize like celebrities in our own time? Are we inflating their significance completely? Not only Hitler, but those we admire like Nelson Mandela? btw When I read his biography "Long Road to Freedom" I had the impression that he just happened to be in the right place at the right time, that he became great circumstantially, but was actually pretty flawed. His treatment of women leaves a lot to be desired and you could tell the biographer was trying to gloss over that. He was also into a lot of illegal activity and killed people.
